Today I’m here to discuss one of the worst questions you can ask a real estate agent.

One of the worst questions you can ask a real estate agent is, “How’s the market?”

That’s a tough question to answer because it’s very vague in nature. As real estate agents, we don’t really know what you mean when you ask us that question. If you’re truly after information about the market, the agent will likely answer that question as it relates to their own, personal business.

They might answer the question in a misleading way, for example, by saying that the market is great right now—they want you to believe that because their business is good, the market is also good.

The truth is that there really is no
one-size-fits-all answer to the question.

Even here in Charleston, our market is all over the place. The entry-level market is still a seller’s market: Prices are going up, and there are bids for newly listed properties within a week of listing. The move-up or middle-tier market has been flatlining for a little bit. Parts of the luxury market are starting to see a decline.

The truth is that there really is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question. If you’d like to know more about what’s happening in your specific area and price range, maybe the question should really be, “Should I buy or sell a house right now, or should I wait? What is it that you know as a real estate agent about our market that I should know as a consumer that will help guide me through this process of buying and selling real estate?”

If that’s something that the Brian Beatty Team can help you with, we’d love the opportunity to do so. Feel free to reach out to us and we can give you the information you need and put you on the path toward your real estate goals.
